Today we’re launching our YouTube channel, a place where we give you a candid, inside look at our team. We also explore the creativity and mastery behind game development, storytelling, and design of some of the most highly anticipated and beloved games. Our first video, How Game Designers Tell Great Stories, features Ascendant’s own Founder, CEO and Game Director, Bret Robbins. He dives into the importance of storytelling in games, and how his experiences designing Dead Space and Call of Duty campaigns influenced his approach making Immortals of Aveum™.
Bret has 26 years of experience creating some of the most memorable AAA games of the past few generations. Whether it’s iconic licensed IP, like The Lord of the Rings and 007 James Bond, entirely original new IPs like Dead Space, or arguably the world’s most popular video game franchise, Call of Duty, Bret’s spent nearly the last three decades telling award-winning stories through the medium of video games.
Now, he’s embarked on his most ambitious game yet, Immortals of Aveum, a single-player first-person magic shooter that tells a visceral, cinematic story inside an original fantasy universe unlike anything the world has ever seen. Our content team talked to Bret about his thoughts on what makes a good story and what he thinks about the current trend of single-player story-driven games in our industry. In the process, we learned how his past experiences have shaped and influenced his approach to designing Immortals of Aveum and bringing its characters and story to life.
Immortals of Aveum Announced at The Game Awards

Made by the creators of Call of Duty and Dead Space, Immortals of Aveum is set in an original fantasy universe engulfed in magic, rife with conflict, and on the verge of oblivion.
